Overview

Who are Vanguard?

Vanguard is one of the world’s most respected investment management companies, offering investments, advice, retirement services and insights to individual investors, institutions and financial professionals.

Founded in 1975, it is famous for its index funds and its advocacy of a buy-and-hold, passive investment strategy: people aren’t very successful when they try to time the market, so it is best to buy investments and hold them for a long time.

The problem

Investing is complex, and many people don’t know where to start.

Older consumers lack the know-how to make personal investments they understand. Investment platforms are complex and difficult to navigate, and many investors don’t know the best way to allocate their money to grow a good yield over time.

Vanguard’s recent app redesign offers a cleaner, more concise interface, but it still falls short on guiding everyday investors through investment selection and strategy.

My role

A solo project, start to finish

I ran it on my own: the research and user insights, the chosen direction, the investment process and wireframe flow, the final UI and components, and the testing with five users.

Chosen direction

Make onboarding fun, effortless and built for mums

The objective: improve the onboarding process for investing and create a more engaging platform designed specifically for mothers, so they feel confident and well informed when they start their investment journey.

Interactive elements, intuitive features and a friendly interface make investing enjoyable and easy to navigate, so mums can take control of their finances without feeling overwhelmed.

Directions explored

    Improved onboarding

    A better investment onboarding process.

  2. 02

    More engaging for mums

A platform designed around busy mothers.

  3. 03

    Fun and easy to use

    Investing that feels effortless.

Chosen direction to explore: improved onboarding, more engaging for mums, fun and easy to use
Process

An investor manager tool

In the traditional process people ask around, analyse offers and invest without a clear idea of the return, so it is hard to know which opportunities pay off over time.

The hypothesis: combine budgeting, saving plans and machine learning. Users set a goal and the amount they want to reach over a period, and the app uses historical data and their preferences to suggest how much to invest each month. A set-and-forget plan with clear targets gives busy mums a head start.

Traditional method
  1. 01

    Asks around about investment options

  2. 02

Analyses the offers available by asking around

  3. 03

Invests without a clear idea of the amount at maturity

  4. 04

Receives the money when the investments mature

New flow
  1. 01

    Rebecca’s goal is $50,000 by 2025

  2. 02

Enters the amount she wants and the time period

  3. 03

Gets a suggested monthly investment to meet the goal

  4. 04

    Looks good?

Yes · Continue No · Back to 02

  5. 05

    Invests the suggested amount

  6. 06

Receives the money when the investments mature

Outcome

Testing with five users: a clear target helps.

Most of the five users found it useful to have a target for their investments, because it gave them a clear picture of potential future returns.

They found the onboarding useful but asked for it to be more interactive and more detailed. Next iteration: revisit onboarding and dig deeper into users’ key pain points to make the key feature more effective.
